State Bar of Texas African American Lawyers Section

The African American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas, through its governing Council, and as part of its Speaking Freely initiative, is initiating its inaugural Student Writing Competition - entitled “Equal Writes” - to be coordinated by its newly-formed Law School Committee.  Equal Writes is open to written Submissions of essays authored by law students in good standing from any of the ten accredited law schools in Texas. The subject of the Submission is determined by the SBOT AALS, and is as follows:

As referenced by Ibram X. Kendi in his book “How to Be an Antiracist”, paraphrased below :

“[If we] fail to realize that if we stop using racial categories, then we will not be able to identify racial inequity. If we cannot identify racial inequity, then we will not be able to identify racist policies. If we cannot identify racist policies, then we cannot challenge racist policies. If we cannot challenge racist policies, then racist power’s final solution will be achieved: a world of inequity none of us can see, let alone resist."

In 1500 words or less, please state your position regarding Kendi's assertion as paraphrased above, explaining the reasoning behind your agreement or disagreement with this statement, and describe how seeking to become a color blind society may be detrimental or beneficial to persons of color, giving concrete examples of such benefits or detriments.

Submission Deadline is receipt by the SBOT AALS on or before 11:59 p.m. CST on Monday May 1, 2022.

Submissions should be emailed to the African American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas (aals.speakingfreely@gmail.com).

The Equal Writes Submissions will be reviewed by a Review Committee within the SBOT AALS Law School Committee, and the Equal Writes Winner will be based upon the best Submission as determined by the sole discretion of the Review Committee.   The winning Submission will be awarded a $1,500 Equal Writes Scholarship Award, with SBOT AALS reserving the right to publish the winning Submission.  In addition, the Equal Writes Winner will be recognized at the Annual Meeting of the African American Lawyers Section during the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas on June 9, 2022.
