To be considered for the award, a nominee must have made substantial and long-term contributions in furtherance of civil rights, civil liberties, and/or human rights outside the United States. A "substantial" contribution is considered to be one demonstrating a level of dedication or achievement beyond that expected in the normal course of an individual's or organization's work. The nominee can be a lawyer, human rights luminary, or international human rights entity, from any jurisdiction outside the United States or working primarily outside the United States. A nominated individual may, but need not be, a legal professional or have legal training. A nominated organization may, but need not be, a legal services entity.
Nomination packets should include a two-page or less description of the nominee's substantial/long-term contributions to the field, a comprehensive CV, and a narrative biography explaining substantial/long-term contributions to human rights advancement (≤1 page). 1-12 Letters of support should also be submitted.
