Nominees should submit their CV and 1-2 letter of support. Normally offered to a scholar in residence outside the United States. The prize recognizes scholarship that has contributed significantly to the advancement of knowledge in the field of law and society.

It is not a book prize, but is instead given in recognition of a body of scholarly work.
