Award given for "empirical scholarship that has contributed most effectively to the advancement of research in law and society." Nominations are open to all forms of law and society scholarship, and from any country of origin, although copies submitted to the committee must be in English.
It is not a book award, nor is it a career achievement award, but is given in recognition of a body of scholarly work, including some portion of work having been completed within the past few years. Self-nominations are accepted.
